IROC’S Summer Series in the Kingdom 2013

Running – Biking – Swimming

In the heart of the Northeast Kingdom

IROCIROC’s Kingdom Summer Games – a series of running, biking, swimming, triathlon, kayaking and motorcycle riding events – are now drawing thousands of participants, their friends and families from 36 different states, five Canadian provinces, Mexico, Great Britain, and as far away as Mumbai, India. They take place in one of the most beautiful areas of the nation, the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, one of the very first geotrourism areas in the world specially designated by National Geographic.

Vermont Sports selected The Dandelion Run as one of the five most scenic running races in Vermont.  Yankee Magazine selected “The Dandy” as one of the 20 best events of Vermont’s summer in 2011.  The Daily News of Open Water Swimming selected Lake Memphremagog and Lake Willoughby as two of the 50 great open water swimming venues in all of the Americas. US Masters Swimming has selected Kingdom Swim to host the 2013 USMS 9+ mile National Championship. And the reviews by participants explain why, even as these events continue to grow, over half of our participants return each year.

May 18, 2013 – Fourth Annual Dandelion Run –  We can say without hesitation that “The Dandy” is the most beautiful, most fun, and most challenging half marathon in the northeast.  The course is laid out largely on dirt roads and is run in High Spring, when the world famous dandelion fields of Derby, Morgan, and Holland are blanketed with millions of dandelions for as far as the eye can see.  A Dandelion Festival of blue grass, old country, and fiddle music, in conjunction with the run, provides a great celebration of spring in the heart of the Northeast Kingdom.   It’s May!  It’s Time to Run!  Just for the Fun of it!
June 5 – 9, 2013 – Seventh Annual Tour de Kingdom –  The Tour has grown to include up to five days of riding. We offer three days of guided riding (Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday).  The Tour culminates in two days of supported Century Rides with a Gran Fondo style, timed event option.  Each of these days also offers optional routes of varying distances. The five day package is becoming increasingly popular among those who love to ride, with group dinners each night for those who want to visit with other cyclists after a great day of riding.

June 15, 2013 – Fifth Annual Son of a Swim  --  2, 4,and 6 mile swims in Lake Memphremagog.  (Qualifier for Kingdom Swim)(Cap 10)

June 29, 2013 – Third Annual Harry Corrow Freedom  A 10 mile trail run along the bike path and into the Memphremagog Ski Touring Trails, plus a 5K and 1 mile run and walk through town.  This event is run in collaboration with Newport City Parks and Recreation Department and Memphremagog Ski Touring Foundation.

July 5, 2013 – Second Annual Kingdom Kayak - The Great American NEK Flatwater Kayak Championship & Festival  A great 10 mile flatwater course: out the bay and around the islands.  We offer four divisions, including “expedition” (non race).

July 6, 2013 – Fifth Annual Kingdom Swim –  10 mile, 6 mile, 3 mile, 1 mile swims for adults and youth, plus ¼ mile and 100 yard swims for youth.  On Lake Memphremagog, Kingdom Swim has been selected to host the national 9+mile USMS Open Water Championship in 2013.  Two 10 mile waves this year:  The Championship Wave and the non championship wave (youth, wetsuits, and those not competing for the championship.)  The swim is held in conjunction with Aquafest, including The Frontier Animal Society’s Pet and Swimmers Parade on Friday evening before the swim. (Caps: 100 per 10 mile wave; 100 per 6, 3, and 1 mile course; 50 for youth short courses.)    No Lanes – No Lines – No Limits.

August 3, 2013 – Sixth Annual Kingdom Triathlon –  We now offer three triathlon events on the same day, a radically different Aquaman Even Up, an Ollie Even Up and a traditional Sprint.  Our Even Up Aquaman Triathlon is a challenging half iron type tri, but with a twist.  The run is a traditional 13.1 mile distance.  The bike route has been shortened to 34 miles.  And the swim consists of a 3.5 mile course in Lake Seymour.  Say what?  Yep.  It is designed so that strong triathletes spend an equal time on each leg.  In 2011 we added the Ollie Even Up, geared to the 10K running distance.  Some say they’ve been waiting most of their adult lives for these types of “even-up” events.  Others say it’s the toughest triathlon they’ve ever done.  It’s not just the swim; watch out for the run!  Then again, we love The Sprint.  And, a great tradition of team competition for The Stick and The Rocks is evolving.  Crazy Nuts.  Just is.

August 3, 2013 – Third Annual Seymour Swim –   3.5 mile and 1.75 mile swimming only option but also part of Kingdom Triathlon. We figured, while we had the buoys up we might as well invite swimmers to join us in one of the most pristine lakes in The Americas.  Do the swim and join our after part early. (Cap 50)
Seven days of swimming over the course of nine days

August 10, 2013 – Crystal Swim – 4 mile swim under the cliffs and around the shores in another spring-fed marvel.  (Cap 50)

August 11, 2013 – Island Pond Swim – 3 mile swim from Brighton State Park Beach around The Island and back. (Cap 25)

August 13 – 15, 2013 – Daily Swims, short and long, at some spectacular venues (Cap 25)
August 17, 2013 – Fourth Annual Willoughby Swim – A no-nonsense, 5 mile swim on one of the most majestic and pristine, glacially carved lakes in the Americas.

August 18, 2013 – Caspian Swim – 3 miles to Bathtub Rock and back or 1.5 miles to The Rock, with shuttle back.  Caspian is a hidden jewel.  Just a great way to end a great week of open water swimming.  (Cap 50)

August 24, 2013 – Fourth Annual Kingdom Thunder – Just can’t celebrate summer in Vermont without getting on the bike and riding The Thunder through the NEK: some of the best roads in Vermont.  No doubt about it.  Great BBQ and Bands.

September 8, 2013 – In Search of Memphre – An epic 25 mile, cold water swim the length of Lake Memphremagog between Newport, VT and Magog, QC.  This is an amateur swim limited to no more than 15 swimmers in 2013. For more info:

September 28-29, 2013 – Second Annual First Foliage Tour – We’ve had so much fun at our five day Tour de Kingdom, we decided we just had to expand our riding options into other parts of the cycling season.  And so, our Northeast Kingdom Cycling Center (a division of IROC) is now hosting a Two-Day, First Foliage Ride on the last weekend of September: Saturday: Around the Lake; Sunday:  The Legendary Lake Region.  Can’t be any question that our cycling territory of Orleans County, northern Essex, and the Eastern Townships of Quebec is The Place Where Fall Foliage Starts.  And when the weather is right, there’s just no better time to ride.

October 5-6, 2013 – Doin’ the Dirt – Did you know that Orleans and northern Essex Counties have more miles of dirt/gravel roads than anyplace in the East Coast?  And the vistas and meandering streams!!  Gotta trade your road bike to a hybrid or mountain bike, but it’s worth it.

October 26, 2013 – Fourth Annual Halloween Hustle –  A positively goulish 10 K, 5 K and 1 mile costume run that is nothing but i-n-s-a-n-i-t-y.
